What is Legacy? The non-profit I worked with for my practicum is called LEGACY School of Discipleship. The practical mission of LEGACY is "To host semester-long trainings that produce wisdom and intentionality within consecrated Christians, and to help young adults become maximized in their entire beings for the sake of affecting their world in a legendary way." LEGACY exists to train young people in their 20's to live a confident life in and with Jesus Christ. LEGACY has two semesters a year, one for 8 weeks in the summer and one for 12 weeks in the spring, where students come to strengthen their relationship with Jesus. LEGACY's main focus is teaching, training, and the building up of young people.
I chose LEGACY for my nonprofit practicum because I whole heartily believe in their mission and their values. I attended LEGACY as a student in the spring of 2016 and it was transformational in my walk with the Lord. After attending LEGACY as a student and seeing the impact the organization has on the people it serves, I always desired to come back and learn from the people who taught me so well. |
Why Philanthropy & nonprofit?I am currently a senior at Auburn University and plan on graduating in the spring of 2019 with a major in Global Studies. Upon graduating, my hope is to get a job somewhere in the south east hopefully in the nonprofit sector.
I chose to minor in Philanthropy and Nonprofit because it is a field that I have always been interested in. My major is Global Studies and I believe that Philanthropy and Nonprofit is a nice compliment to my major. I also hope to work with a nonprofit for my occupation and maybe even start a nonprofit one day. This minor has helped me learn and understand what it takes to run a successful nonprofit. This minor has also taught me that running a nonprofit is a difficult but rewarding work. I now feel better prepared to go into a career in the nonprofit sector. |
My experienceAt LEGACY I was an Administrative Intern. I was given the opportunity to work in several different administrative aspects of the organization and get a behind the scenes look at how a nonprofit operates on a day-to-day basis.
My roles at LEGACY included:
This experience has taught me much about the world of nonprofits and how they operate. I have learned that nonprofits, although they do not exist for their own benefit, run very similar to a normal business. It has also taught me that running a well functioning nonprofit is a complex job that takes much more organization and planning than I knew prior to this experience. If anything, this experience taught me that I enjoy working in the environment of a small nonprofit and it has inspired me to pursue a similar type of job for my future. Overall I enjoyed the experience and I am thankful that it confirmed my passion to work for a nonprofit. |
